How do you improve your voice?

Friday, August 03, 2007

This question was posed on the Yahoo! Podcasters email list yesterday. The list is usually full of a lot of noise, but this one question brought out some good information from subscribers, so I wanted to note it here.

Everyone wants to sound like a professional radio announcer or voiceover artist. But you don’t have to. You can certainly do things to help improve how you sound on the microphones (see my short article on podcast voice training and podcast).

Anyway, here are some of the responses:

Stop worrying so much about your voice. Learn to like it.

Listen to the podcasts / radio broadcasts of someone whose voice
you admire and try to learn his/her technique. You do not want to be a
copycat, but you do want to learn their way of breathing, talking,
inserting pauses.

I have two words for anyone who thinks his or her voice is an
impediment: Ira Glass.

The last wins. Hands down.
